John F. Murphy
John Murphy was born 1859 in Russell Co., AL. The son of William
S. and Sarah (Dickson) Murphy, both of GA. John was the grandson
of Felix and Nancy Murphy. John worked for atleast 8 years at
the Chiwakle Lime Company in Russell/Lee Co.'s. Before 1902, John
moved to Kentucky and took the name John Floyd. On April 10, 1902
John married Lillie Florence Fenix, daughter of James Fenix and
Minerva (Pipes) Fenix. To this union 8 children were born:
John Emmitt, Mazie, Lillie L., Lee, Marie, James Baxter, Sallie B.,
Ulysis Lamar. Three of these children died in infancy; Lillie L.,
Lee and Marie.
John worked for many years at Cosmosdale Quarry in Meade Co., KY
and continued to work after an explosion cost him his eyesight in
one eye. But a second explosion, taking the sight in his good eye,
forced him to quit working.
A woman currently (1998) living in Meade Co. says she remembers when
she was very young John being led around on a horse with the help of
his son, Baxter.
John died in 1923, at the age of 54, and is buried in Lodiburg,
Hardin Co., KY in Walnut Grove Cemetery.
