The burials in the old Leavenworth Cemetery stopped when the new cemetery started, approx. 1850. Anyone after that would have been buried in the new cemetery up on the hill. (Cedar Cemetery)

My great grandmother's oldest sister, Laurinda Francis Riggle Miller was buried in a Leavenworth Cemetery. She died in 1874. We were told the entire cemetery washed away in the 1937 flood. Is this the same cemetery? Or a part of it? Where would another cemetery have been located that would be subject to such erosion? Thank you.

To Dee,

I do not have any information for you requarding those buried at the Old Leavenworth Cemetery but I am curious about the James Castlin(infant) that was buried there....no other Castlins are there ?? I had relatives with the surname of CASTLEN living in Priceton, Crawford County... any other new data perhaps??? I feel sure that James was somehow related....thanks

Pam and everyone

Here is a bit of information I have on this cemetery:

Burials in this cemetery took place between the years 1816-1850. The New Leavenworth Cemetery (Cedar Cemetery) was started by the Leavenworth family in 1846, and most burials from then on were in the new cemetery, except those already promised to others.

A few in the cemetery: (from a description given by Mack Tucker: 4ft tall obelisk stated: In Memory of John L. Smith d. 1838
Cordelius(poss. Cordelia) Smith 8 years old (child of John & Melinda)
D.E.L. Smith 1 yr. 8 mo.(dau. of John & Melinda)
Melinda Lyon Smith (wife of John)
J.L. Smith Infant (child of John & Melinda)
-------
Others I believe are buried here, my reason for feeling this is due to their date of death, and their family being the Leavenworth:

Zebulon Leavenworth b. 29NOV1824 d. JAN1826 This was the son of Zebulon Leavenworth, founder of Leavenworth, IN

Preserved Marshall Leavenworth b. 14DEC1833 d. 12JUN1850 Another son of Zebulon Leavenworth

William Thaddeus Leavenworth b. 10DEC1847 d. 9MAR1849 Another son of Zebulon and Margaret (Patterson) Leavenworth.
-------------
A few others I have been told are buried there:

Joel Lyon
Sarah (Davidson) Lyon

Bevin family - including 4 children - scarlet fever

James Castlin 16mos. old

James Fields - was hung for killing mother

Isabell Frazier - 6 yrs. old

Sophrina Hughes - 11 months

D.E. Lyon - Son of Daniel Lyon
Persy Lyon - Daughter of Daniel Lyon

Other surnames I was told were in this cemetery: (very reliable source, a man researching this cemetery)

McNaughton
Miller
Pendleton
Reynolds d. 1840 17 yrs. old
Sands
Sauherheber
Shields d. 1840
Shipe (female) 12 years old
Stacy 1840
Susan Ward d. 1840
Warner
Wilbur
Wilkins
Harriett Young
-----
There was also one *John Doe* found dead in the area and buried in this cemetery.

I've been told there were as many as 30 actual Leavenworths in this cemetery, which I feel is totally possible, as there were many Leavenworths came to this area after Zebulon and Seth set up the town. Many sisters, brothers and their families came into this area, and this would be the most likely place for them to be buried. Since I am 5-great grandaughter to Zebulon, this is very important to me, as well.

I hope this helps someone to possibly find their missing ancestors grave! Pam, I will also be e-mailing this information to you. I'll get with you soon.

Dee

Looking for anyone who has ancestors buried in Old Leavenworth Cemetery in Old Leavenworth,
Crawford County, IN. We are trying to help finish a project of naming all the people buried there as all the stones have been removed. To make matters worse, there is no list of people buried in that cemetery so we must rely on help from you. Land sold so hoping the new owner will help restore the cemetery.
