Here's a general research question. If I come to the county courthouse, can I look in the books myself to find the births/deaths etc.? In other states, I've been able to just "help myself" and the copying is about 25 cents each. Or, do I have to submit a form and pay $5 or $10? I don't need a certified anything; I just want to browse. Are there any hints I can get to make my trip from Chicago more efficient?

Jeremiah NOBLE 3296, Breathitt Co.
This interview made at Lost Creek, Kentucky.
JEREMIAH NOBLE. My grandfather, Nathan, with his brothers Enoch and William came from Lee County, Virginia, to Breathitt County. They were all unlearned men. There were THREE FAMILIES ON LOST CREEK WHEN THEY CAME. They were born in Richmond, Virginia. Nathan's wife was Jane Neece... her brothers came with them, Jacob, Austin, and Henry. The Fugates came about the same time, and from the same place. There were four brothers of the Fugates, Jonathan, Eli, Levi, and Zachariah. Eli and Levi were soldiers in the Revolutionary War. I think Henry was too. BARNEY (Barnet) RUSSELL WAS ONE OF THE FAMILIES ON LOST CREEK WHEN THESE CAME. AB RUSSELL IS A DESCENDANT OF BARNEY RUSSELL. The Haddixes were here when these people came. The first man in this country lived at the mouth of Lost Creek. Lawson Noble, son of Nathan Noble, was born on the way from Virginia. Jonathan Fugate was a Revolutionary soldier. ----

I am confused about the Carpenter family of Breathitt County in the 1850's and 1860's. I have been told that William Carpenter, b. 1804?, married Sarah "Sallie" Elizabeth Howard b. Abt. 1812. Children : Benjamin, Andrew, Stephen, John, Nancy, Samuel, Malinda, George and William. In 1850, I have found on the census for Breathitt County both Sarah Carpenter, with the correct children and ages by my records and also a Sallie Carpenter with the correct childrens' names and ages. In one she was head of household, in the other was living with son Benjamin. Where she was listed as HOH, there was a George Miller and Abner Miller (children) in the household. Next door was a Owen and Matilda Miller.
In 1860 I found William Carpenter with an Elizabeth and sons Samuel and William approximately the correct ages but a son Harrison that I have no record of.
I don't know if these are the same people or if they are other, either related or unrelated, families.
Can anyone help??

I am looking on any information on the Hatton family of Breathitt Co. My grandpa, Carl Walter Hatton was born there. His parents were Benjamin Hatton and Nancy McPhearson. Benjamin Hatton's parents were Benjamin Hatton and Arti William. I know that the younger Benjamin Hatton was married twice, his second wife was very much younger than he was. I have information on the McPhearsons, but the Hattons are ellusive.

I am looking for Information on the Short Family from Breathitt County, My ggg-father Isaac Short, in paticular, he died from a gun shot wound and I was told that it had something to do with a ongoing family feud. The older generation of my family the ones that are still alive will not tell me anything, I was told history is the past leave it there. But it is mine and my childrens history so I am willing to listen to anyone that can tell me anything about this or anything about the Short family at all. I believe my g-grandmother was Lillian Callahan and was married to Bradley Short, who is the son of Isaac Short, he was also called Ike. Thank you

Does anyone know of an Emily Burns who first married a Sizemore, then later, Hogan Hacker of Clay Co.? She was my Granny Ella Hacker Allen's mother. Relatives insist that she was from Breathitt Co., but I find few Burns records in Breathitt, and I'm pretty sure her second husband was from Clay Co. I'd love to know who her parents were.
