S/Sgt Bert C. Hayes, 20, was killed in action on March 5 in Germany, according to a notification from the war department. He formerly made his home with his grandparents, Mr and Mrs Mahlon Summers, at Marengo, and attended the Marengo high school. Also surviving are his wife, Mildred Nicholson Hayes, and a son, Ronald, age 2, of New Albany.
