I'm descended from Nancy Ann Hestifine Burks, who was born 2 Aug 1854 in Sonora, Hardin County, Kentucky. Nancy was the child of James Burks, born about 1813 in Kentucky and Phoebe ?, born about 1815 in Virginia. Other children include Charles Burks, b. Jan 1843 and Hannah I. Burks, b. about 1852. There may have been other children. Sometime after their children were born, James and Phoebe Burks moved to Grayson County, Texas. Family tradition says that James was an officer in the Union Army, and a Baptist minister. I'm hoping to find out more information about James and Phoebe's families.

William Owens b. 17 May 1801 d. 24 Jul 1828 Jefferson Co., KY, buried at German Reformed Presbyterian Cemetery, Jeffersontown, KY, his tombstone reads, "In Memory of William Owens, who departed this life July 24th 1828, aged 27 years, 2 months & 7 days. In Dec. 1819 at the Methodist Church meeting, he donated 50 cents towards a stove (heater) for the combined church. He married in Jefferson Co., KY 21 Jan 1821 to Frances "Fanny" Zilhart , she born Circa 1797. They had 2 children, both sons. 1. Mathew Henry Owens b. Apr 1822 Jeffersontown, Jefferson Co., KY 2. William A. Owens. b. Jan 1828 Jeffrsontown, Jefferson Co., KY, baptized 1 Sept 1833 at the German Lutheran Church, sponsors were Philip and Lydia Bentz. After the father William Owens died, his widow remarried 15 May 1839 to John Muster of Jefferson Co., KY, they had no children together. I know nothing more about the Father William Owens, other than ONE census that his son Mathew listed his father being born in TN. I do not know where the son William ended up either, but he did reach "adulthood" as he is listed as selling his joint property with his brother Mathew, property they had inherited from their Grandfather Philip Zilhart. Mathew married 4 times, the 2nd wife had no children, or possibly died in childbirth. 1st wife m. 29 Jul 1841 Shelby Co., Ky Elizabeth Jacobs b. Cir 1814 d. 1 Feb 1852 Jefferson Co., KY (daughter of Martin Jacobs & Judith) Children: 1. James "Jim" W. Owens b. 1842 Johnson Co., IN d. Possibly 26 Nov. 1922 Jefferson Co., KY m. Matilda Banks. 2. Owens. b.Feb 1848 KY m. John T. Springer 2nd wife married ABT 1852, she died 9 Apr 1856 Bullitt Co., KY, per his pension records, but no name for her is known. 3rd wife married ? Mary Eveline Williamson (step daughter) b. 1851 IA m. David Tripp 2. Woodford Henry Owens b. 19 Jun 1856 Marshall Co., IA d. 4 Oct 135 Webster Co., KY, occupation farm laborer, m. Matilda "Maggie" Shelton & Katie Farmer (a deceased half brother's widow). I am assuming that from when Mathew's 2nd wife died, that Woodford may have just assumed Mathew's last name, but is not really a child of Mathew's. 3. Robert D. "Bob" Owens b. 1862 KY 4. Susan Owens b. 1865 wife #4 m. 14 Nov. 1867 Morganfield, Union Co., KY Nancy Jane Tripp b. 21 Mar 1844 IN. d. 28 Apr 1916 Union Co., KY(daughter of David R. Tripp and Betsy L. Harvey Owens b. 28 Jul 1886 Webster Co., KY d. 19 Jun 1968 Jefferson Co., KY m. Susie Smith Going by family legend, there are more children, he was suppose to be the father of 28 children, with 4 wives, and one wife had no children. I've found the wives, still need a name for wife #2. Matthew was a teacher in Johnson Co., IN, he was a carpenter and a preacher. His Uncles, George and Philip Jr. Zilhart were wagonmakers and may have helped him to learn his carpentry trade.
